Mike Good begins his 8th year as Madison Academy's Head Baseball Coach. With Mike at the helm, the Mustangs have produced an overall record of 195-96 (.671 win percentage) which includes seven Class 3A "Area Championships." In 2009, the Mustangs captured the school's first Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class-3A State Championship. Their overall record of 32-18 matched a school record for number of victories and the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) ranked the Mustangs among the "Top 10" for the 8th year in a row.

This past year Coach Good was recognized by the Huntsville Times as the "2009 Coach of the Year" for North Alabama's Elite Team. Mike was also voted All-Metro "Coach of the Year" for Class 1A-4A after each of the 2003, 2004, and 2005 seasons. In 2004 he was further distinguished by being named one of four coaches to manage the North squad during the Lions Club's East-West All-Star competition in Birmingham, AL. In addition, Coach Good is recognized in many athletic circles throughout North Alabama, having been honored in 2001 by the Huntsville / Madison County Convention and Visitor's Bureau for outstanding contributions in hosting athletic and sporting events.

In 2009 Mustang players continued a long tradition of receiving post-season honors. The ASWA named junior Stafford Booth 1st Team "All-State" for Class 3A and "All-State Honorable Mention" recognition went to junior Jordan Kerr, sophomore Drew Mobley and sophomore Jared Brinson. The Huntsville Times recognized seven Mustangs as among North Alabama's "Elite Team." Stafford and Drew were members of the 1st and 2nd team respectfully, while Jordan Kerr, Jared Brinson, sophomore Ben Seabrook, and freshmen Ian Rice and Chris Adams were all named in the Honorable Mention category.

Corey Williams capped off a tremendous senior year in 2008 by receiving the ASWA Super All-State "Pitcher of the Year" award in Class 3A. Corey also landed on the "Super All-Metro" team with fellow senior Brad Montgomery. Corey was further distinguished as "Player of the Year" by the Huntsville Times for Class 1A-4A. Also recognized as "All-Metro" for Class 1A-4A were seniors Kelby Deerman and Chandler Wicks along with sophomore Stafford Booth. Booth was also selected "All-State Honorable Mention" and freshmen Jared Brinson rounded out the post season honors having been named "All-Metro Honorable Mention."

A record number of Mustangs were honored by the Huntsville Times in 2007; three in the "Super All-Metro" category led by senior Kyle Mayes and joined by senior Lance Clark and junior Corey Williams. Clark and Williams were named 1st Team "All-State." Junior Brad Montgomery was listed among the "All-State Honorable Mention" recipients and The Birmingham News also bestowed All-State Honorable Mention on senior Joey Tatara. Williams received the "All-Metro Pitcher of the Year" award and Class 1A-4A honorees included senior Andrew Purshock, junior Kelby Deerman, senior Will Morrison, junior Chandler Wicks, and freshmen Stafford Booth.

2006 saw Lance Clark and Kelby Deerman named to the "All-State" team by the ASWA while Joey Tatara was named in the "Honorable Mention" category. In addition, the Mustangs had six "All-Metro" selections. Those recognized by the Huntsville Times included: Lance Clark, Joey Tatara, Stafford Booth, Will Morrison, Kelby Deerman, and A.J. Luna. Special honors went to Deerman and Luna. Kelby was named "Super All-Metro" and deemed "Player of the Year" for Class 1A-4A while A.J. was named "Pitcher of the Year" for Class 1A-4A.

The cast of "All-Metro" selections in 2005 included seniors Benji Waite, Ben Wimberly, and Robbie Bishop who were joined by sophomores Kyle Mayes, Lance Clark and Joey Tatara. Waite was named 1st Team "All-State" by the ASWA while Wimberly and Mayes were "Honorable Mention." 2004 "All-Metro" honors went to Waite and Wimberly along with seniors J.D. Glenn, Joey Pierce, and Justin Khammar. J.D. Glenn received 1st Team All-State honors after tying the AHSAA State Record for doubles in a season with 24. "All- Metro" representatives in 2003 were seniors Todd Whitt, Chris Cohen, Brian Cothren, and junior J.D. Glenn.

Coach Good began his athletic career in Arlington, VA. as a 3-sport letterman at Yorktown High School. He was a 3-year starter and 2-year captain of the varsity baseball team, an "All Potomac District Team" selection in both his junior and senior seasons, and named "All Northern Virginia" in 1973. Mike graduated holding school records for the highest single season batting average, most hits-season, most walks-season and career, most extra base-hits-season and career, and most RBI's season. Mike received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNC-W) where he was a member of their NAIA World Series team of 1975. Mike was also a member of UNC-W's first NCAA Division 1 baseball team in 1977 and a member of the 1973 and 1974 Stroube's Baseball Club, which earned trips to the All-American Amateur Baseball Association World Series. Mike is married to the former Peggy Lyons. Mike and Peggy have two children, Logan and Kyle, both graduates of Madison Academy.

Troy Mitchell begins his fifth year as an Assistant Coach with the Madison Academy varsity. Troy is a 2006 graduate of the University of Alabama at Huntsville where he played for Coach Lowell Mooneyham. As a pitcher for the Chargers he totaled 31 career starts including a junior campaign when he compiled an 8-5 record. Troy's senior year was highlighted by a 3 hit shut-out versus West Alabama in the first conference game of the year.

Troy has been a tremendous asset to the Mustang program as he is responsible for the varsity pitching staff and handling 1st base coaching duties. He enjoys working with high school athletes who aspire to better themselves in the classroom as well as the baseball field. Troy holds his Masters Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from UAH and is currently employed by SAIC.

Troy began his athletic career at Ardmore High School where he played for Roger Cobb. His two year career pitching record of 19 wins and 4 defeats remains a school record for "win percentage." Troy also accumulated 14 career wins for Coach Good while playing for the Madison Monarchs during the 2000 and 2001 summer campaigns.

Gary Mayes begins his fourteenth overall season as a Madison Academy Assistant Coach. Gary had previous assignments as the school's Head Junior Varsity Coach and Head Middle School Coach. During a two year period, from 2002-2003, he led the Mustang Middle School program to "back-to-back" Madison County Middle School Championships, going undefeated in league play.

During this coming season Gary will be responsible for working with the Mustang catchers, an assignment he has had for the past 13 seasons. As the State of Alabama’s first certified "SPARQ" Trainer, Gary also works with the squad on speed and agility as well as base-running. Gary continues to serve the Mustang Athletic Department as an assistant coach with the Mustang football team where he coaches wide receivers and defensive backs.

Gary began his athletic career in Warren, MI where he was a 2-sport letterman at Warren High School in football and track. Gary was a walk-on football player at Tennessee Tech University where he played wide receiver and on special teams from 1981-1984. While at TTU, Gary played under former Alabama and Texas A&M Head Coach Dennis Franchione. Gary and his wife Lisa have two children, Kyle and Katie. Kyle is a 2007 graduate of Madison Academy and a junior at Lipscomb University. Katie is a 2009 graduate of Madison Academy and a freshman at the University of Alabama.

Luke Putnam joins the Madison Academy Baseball program as an Assistant Coach after completing his college eligibility and earning a degree from the University of Alabama at Huntsville. This former lead-off hitter accumulated a .300 or better batting average every year for four straight college seasons. His college experience includes a two year stint at Columbia State Community College before being recruited by UAH assistant Hunter Royer. Luke only missed 8 games during his 4-year career (due to injury) and his positive mental approach and work ethic will be an excellent example to our Mustang players. Luke’s initial assignment will be as an Instructor for both infielders and outfielders. In addition he will be responsible for coordinating batting practice among all practice groups. Luke is currently employed by Verizon Wireless.

Bart Carter begins his third season as Madison Academy's Junior Varsity Head Coach and sixth season overall. Previous assignments for Bart included handling pitchers for the Mustang baseball program and serving as Head Coach for the Mustang Middle School team.

Prior to joining the Mustang program, Bart was an assistant coach at East Lawrence High School working under current Hazel Green Head Coach T.J. Orr. Bart also brings considerable experience from the "club circuit" where he was part of the Bama Bombers organization. With the Bombers Bart coached some of the better pitching prospects in the state of Alabama.

Bart is a native of Hamilton, AL where he played baseball at Hamilton High School. Bart was a pitcher for part of two seasons at Mississippi State University playing for legendary coach Ron Polk. He transferred at the end of his sophomore year and pitched one additional season at Freed-Hardeman University. Bart and his wife Emily reside in Madison, Alabama with their two children, Ethan and Samuel.

David Converse is the Head Middle School Baseball Coach at Madison Academy. He enters his 2nd year trying to leverage off last year’s performance when our 7th & 8th graders brought home the North Alabama Middle School Baseball League Championship trophy. In addition, David assists the varsity staff in scouting play-off opponents during the final weeks of the regular season. David also coaches football at Sparkman High School. Originally from Atlanta, GA. he was a multi-sport athlete at Greater Atlanta Christian. He met his wife Kim at Harding University where he earned his degree in Sales and Marketing in 1989. David and Kim have three children with daughter Whitney a 5th grader at Madison Academy.

Greg Dennis begins his fifth season with the Madison Academy Baseball Program. In addition to being the Mustangs hitting instructor, Greg will also serve as the Freshmen Coach this season. His previous assignments included being the Head Middle School coach. Greg is a native of Madison County and a graduate of New Hope High School. In 1988 Greg earned a B.S. Degree in Mathematics from Freed-Hardeman University. He is currently employed with System Studies and Simulations as a Systems Engineer. Greg’s past coaching experience includes four years as the Head Coach for the North Alabama Giants, a competitive youth baseball program located in Huntsville, Alabama. Greg has three children, Todd (Senior), Marissa (9th grade), and Autumn (7th grade). All three attend Madison Academy.

Ken Ricketts will begin his sixth season with the Madison Academy Baseball Program. Ken has served as an outfield instructor as well as a bench and 1st base coach for the Mustangs junior varsity and middle school teams. Ken and his wife Temple are native to the Madison and Limestone area where Ken attended East Limestone High School and played for current East Limestone High School Principal Dennis Black. Ken is currently employed by General Motors Corporation and remains active in Huntsville’s senior men’s baseball league. This senior circuit not only provides recreational and travel opportunities for those 40+ year olds that still enjoy playing the game of baseball, but annually they contribute to such programs as the “Miracle League,” a baseball program designed for mentally & physically handicapped children. Ken and Temple have one son Denver who attends Madison Academy.

Ray Palmer will be in his fifth season with the Madison Academy Baseball Program. Ray will handle administrative duties for the Madison Academy Baseball Program as well as serve as the Team Chaplain. Previous assignments included assistant coaching duties for the Mustang Middle School Program.

Ray was a 5-sport athlete in football, basketball, baseball, tennis and golf at Webster County High School in Dixon, Kentucky before attending Freed Hardeman College on a tennis scholarship. Ray began coaching baseball with the Alabama Rockets, a competitive youth baseball team from Huntsville, AL in 2001. During Ray’s 3-year tenure with the Rockets, the team ranked among the top four in the nation by the USSSA, and the team was a regular participant in the USSSA World Series. Ray is employed as an air traffic controller for the FAA and also performs as a minister for the Monrovia Church of Christ.

Ray and his wife Kristy have two children, Brittany and Spencer, and Spencer is currently a junior at Madison Academy.
