Home Run Derby or Bombs Away?

The Madison Academy baseball program completed a very successful fall evaluation period with the 1st Annual Andy Mobley Home Run Derby on Saturday, December 15th. In total, 40 home run balls "left the yard" to the delight of the crowd who were present at this well attended event. The Alumni Mustangs recorded 21 "round trippers" to edge out the current roster even though things were kept competitive by the current class who put 19 baseballs "out of the yard". "Bombs Away" and "Get-out-of-Here" were common expressions wispered by the crowd through-out the day.

Madison Academy Alumni were well represented by Adam Bass (Class of '99 and current San Diego Padre) and Logan Good (Class of '99) who served as the batting practice pitchers. Holding down the home run hitting duties for the Alumni were Class of '05 teammates Benji Waite (current UAB Blazer) and Ben Wimberly. The '07 class made a strong showing with Kyle Mayes (Birmingham Southern), Joey Tatara (UAH), Will Morrison (Calhoun CC), Andrew Purshock (Calhoun CC), and Lance Clark (Carson-Newman football) who contributed to the fortunes of the Alumni. Equal to the challenge were our present roster of Mustangs which saw Stafford Booth, Brad Montgomery, Corey Williams, Chandler Wicks, and Scott Jordan all making it into the quarter-finals. Emerging from this hitting log-jam were Benji Waite who represented the Alumni and Stafford Booth who represented our current class. Things were not settled quickly as both Benji and Stafford remained tied after recording 3 home runs in the championship round. In the tie-breaker round Benji Waite took the 1st pitch he saw over the right field wall to end the contest. It was a spectacular display of power as Benji and Stafford combined for 21 home runs before the elder won out and the crowd witnessed the 40th ball leaving the playing surface at the Jeff Stinnett Athletic Complex. The coaching staff can only assume what may lurk next year?

Coach Good commented after the event, "I don't know if Madison Academy Baseball has ever conducted a more electrifying athletic fundraising event. You had everything you could possibly look for in a fun-filled athletic competition. Comraderie among the participants, drama, intense competition, alumni participation surrounded by a family gathering. It was extremely gratifying to see a number of former Mustang parents and players present as well as the keen sense of interest held by current Mustang parents. When you stop and think about it you had 30 years of Mustang Baseball represented in the crowd."

It should be noted that we saw 30 years of Mustang Baseball represented through donations and giving. The Madison Academy baseball family is extremely grateful to the heart felt response that has been displayed through this event toward the Mobley and Sadler families, as well as our Mustang Baseball family. We appreciate those who have contributed and hope that others would look to contribute next year as we make this an annual event.

The Mustangs broke camp at the end of the day and look to resume preparation for the 2008 season on Monday, January 7th.

Madison Academy 2007 Summer Baseball Report

The Mustangs returned to "The Corral" at the Jeff Stinnett Athletic Complex with an impressive set of summer league statistics and credentials. Here are a few of the highlights.

Corey Williams: The senior Mustang left-hander has just completed an eventful summer highlighted by a 3 hit, 8 strike-out performance at the Perfect Game Showcase in Atlanta, GA. Corey's summer tour included a fashionable appearance at the East Coast Professional Scouts Showcase in Lakeland, FL. and additional appearances in Joplin, MO. to compete against Team USA in the Junior National Trials. Baseball America has Corey rated among the top 500 high school baseball prospects in the United States for the class of 2008. Great opportunities were afforded and taken advantage of by the Vanderbilt bound pitcher.

Stafford Booth: Our rising Mustang sophomore saw his East Cobb Astros capture the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 15 and under World Series in Chicago, IL. Stafford was named to the "CABA All-World Tournament Team" after posting a .678 batting average, 14 RBI's, and 3 Home Runs in the series. In addition, Stafford was selected the Most Valuable Player at the USSSA Super National Invitational Tournament held in Atlanta, GA. These distinctions earned Stafford a place on the 2007 "15 and under" All-American Travel Ball Select Team for the 3rd year in a row as determined by Travelbaseballselect.com. Outstanding recognition given to an outstanding player!

Kelby Deerman: Our Mustang first-baseman competed for Decatur's Post 15 during the American Legion summer campaign. Kelby played outfield, first-base, and accumulated a 4-1 pitching record for the Indians. His 1.04 strike-outs to innings pitched ratio ranked 2nd on the team. In addition, Kelby's overall "innings pitched" placed him fourth among a staff comprised primarily of college freshmen. Kelby's accomplishments contributed to Decatur Post 15 reaching the state-semi finals as the Indians finished 3rd in the State of Alabama. Kelby continues to enjoy great success and we appreciate what he brings to our program!

Brad Montgomery: Outfielder Brad Montgomery successfully completed his 2007 summer as the leading hitter for the Tennessee Valley Eagles. Brad secured the 3rd position in the batting order with a .404 batting average. Also quite remarkable was his collection of 15 doubles, 5 triples, and 4 home runs in the Southeastern Championship Series "wooden-bat" league. Brad's contributions helped the Eagles complete the season as the 3rd ranked team among this contingent of Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida travel teams. Topping off the summer was his selection to the "All Southeastern Championship Series Team" for 2007! Great job Brad!

Chandler Wicks: As one of the mainstays in the Mustang line-up the past two seasons, Chandler's hit production did not taper off as the dog days of summer approached. Chandler led Huntsville Post 237's Junior American Legion team in several offensive categories including batting average and RBI's. As the catcher for the State of Alabama's Junior American Legion champions, Chandler accumulated a .424 batting average while knocking in 38 runs. He also saw duties as the designated hitter in addition to handling Post 237's pitching staff from behind the plate. Chandler's summer coaches were quoted as saying, "pitching was the key to our success and Chandler handled the staff extremely well."

Scott Jordan: Huntsville Post 237's Junior American Legion team got solid relief pitching from the Mustang senior. In addition, Scott was called into starting assignments on 5 occasions highlighted by his111 pitch performance against Decatur Post 15 at Priceville High School resulting in a win for the Rebels. Scott finished the summer making 11 appearances over 24 innings collecting 2 saves along the way. The big-right hander was an imposing figure throughout the summer campaign! Can you spell "RELIEF."

Madison Academy upset in baseball playoffs: No. 3 team in Class 3A stunned by Lauderdale Co.

by CARLTON RICE for the Times - Third-ranked Madison Academy made an unexpected early exit from the Class 3A playoffs Tuesday when visiting Lauderdale County won 5-4 after scoring the winning run on a bases-loaded walk. The score was 4-all going into the seventh inning when the Tigers loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. They then drew the winning walk off Madison Academy pitcher Corey Williams, who had held the Tigers scoreless after entering in the fifth inning.

"We told our guys that physically they're better than we are," said Lauderdale County coach Trent Patterson. "Then I told them you only have to be better than them one day and that's Tuesday. "We probably didn't catch them at their best because they are a great team. We looked at the scouting reports and no one believed we could win, but my guys believed and that's all that mattered."

Madison Academy led 2-0 after two innings. In the top of the third, infield throwing errors cost the Mustangs three unearned runs and Lauderdale County took a 4-2 lead and the momentum at the end of the third inning. The Mustangs struck back with two runs that tied the score in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs had an opportunity to tie or go ahead with runners on second and third with two out. Lauderdale County pitcher Ethan Wallen managed to strike out the final batter to secure the nail-biting victory.

"Ethan Wallen threw a heck of a game," said Madison Academy coach Mike Good. "When put in tough situations, he rose to the occasion. They (Lauderdale County) played better defensively than scouting reports indicated. They came in here with a plan and executed it."

Jake Ballentine led the Tigers offensively with a double and a single and scored two runs. Kelby Deerman led Madison Academy with two singles and one RBI. Andrew Purshock scored two runs for the Mustangs (32-9). Wallen (5-2) went the distance and got the win. Brad Montgomery started for the Mustangs and went 4 1/3 innings before Williams, who took the loss, entered in relief with the score tied 4-all. Lauderdale County (18-18) advances to face Plainview in the second round.

Strong-armed Mustangs: Madison Academy coach says this team is school's best

by MIKE EASTERLING - Madison Academy has lost to the eventual state champion in the Class 3A baseball playoffs in each of the last three seasons, last year in the second round and the previous two times in the quarterfinals. The Mustangs, ranked third in the state, have every intention of going further this year. If a recent 12-game winning streak - not to mention 14 wins over 5A and 6A teams - during a 26-7 season is any indication, then Madison Academy no doubt has set its sights no lower than a state title.

The Mustangs outscored opponents 132-19 during their winning streak that ended last weekend with a 9-5 setback to 5A Muscle Shoals. Among the 12 straight victims were 6A Grissom, Hazel Green and Buckhorn and 5A Charles Henderson and Decatur. "This is the best team Madison Academy has ever had,'' said Mustangs coach Mike Good, whose team resumed its winning ways with shutout victories over Lee (5-0) and Holly Pond (10-0) earlier this week. "We've never been this deep. Top to bottom this is the best club our school has put on the field." The temptation is to try and poke holes in Madison Academy's wins over larger schools. The Mustangs, in full command of its area race, have tossed junior left-handers Corey Williams and Kelby Deerman in many of those wins while those schools have held back top pitchers with the Mustangs sandwiched between area games.

Doesn't matter, say opposing coaches. "They're still hitting and shutting the other team down," Lee's Butch Weaver said. "They've got hitters up and down their lineup. Their eight and nine hitters are just as good as some teams' three and four hitters." Buckhorn coach Roger Wright gives a similar scouting report. "I haven't seen a hole in their lineup," said Wright, whose Bucks have already secured a 5A, Area 15 playoff spot.

Good, an assistant from 1993-2002 before taking over as head coach, has been in the dugout for some of the finer school teams Madison Academy has fielded. The Mustangs finished second in the state in 1996, losing in the 1A finals at Maplesville. In '99, the Mustangs won a best-of-three 1A semifinal series at Westbrook but were later disqualified from playing in the final because of violating a pitching rule. They advanced to the 1A semifinals in 2000. The past three seasons playig in 3A the Mustangs have lost to Hokes Bluff in the second round, Plainview in the quarterfinals and Central-Florence in the quarterfinals. Those teams all went on to win state.

The Mustangs might have to go through those teams again. Hokes Bluff is ranked No. 1, Plainview No. 9. But Madison Academy won't back down from the challenge, not with so much success against such a tough schedule. "We just can't be cocky," Williams said, "but we've got to be confident." Added senior catcher/pitcher Joey Tatara, who has signed with UAH, "Confident but humble." The Mustangs bat .378 as a team led by junior designated hitter/catcher Chandler Wicks (.441), junior pitcher/outfielder Brad Montgomery (.438), senior outfielder Lance Clark (.434) and senior second baseman Kyle Mayes (.409). The pitching staff has an ERA of 2.90. Williams and Deerman are both 7-1 and Williams has two saves. They're backed by Montgomery and freshman Stafford Booth, who also plays outfield. Williams was just 5-6 last season but has emerged as the ace. He has wins over Buckhorn, Grissom, Decatur, Hartselle, Vestavia Hills and Bob Jones. His lone loss was to Grissom in the second game of the season. "I'm more accurate, more mature," Williams said. "I learned how to pitch this year." With a strong staff and a batting order that features no averages below .300, this could be the Mustangs' year. "We're close and we play for each other," Tatara said. "The younger guys want to win it (all) for the seniors."

April 11, 2007

Madison Academy 10, Holly Pond 3: Kelby Deerman had three hits and two RBIs and Chamdler Wicks added three hits to lead the host Mustangs (26-7, 3-0 in 3A , Area 14), who had 15 hits for the game. Lance Clark, who earlier in the day signed a football scholarship with Carson-Newman, added two hits and two RBIs and Corey Williams had two hits and three RBIs. Kyle Mayes also added two hits.

April 10, 2007

Madison Academy 5, Lee 0: Kelby Deerman (7-1) went the distance, striking out nine to get the win. Lance Clark had two hits, including a double, for the Mustangs (25-7). Brad Montgomery had two hits, Chandler Wicks had a hit and two RBIs and Deerman and Stafford Booth both added one hit and one RBI. Kyle Rose had a double to lead the Generals.

In the second game, Stafford Booth took the loss to fall to 4-2. Lance Clark and Chandler Wicks had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Mustangs. Rusty Todd got the win for Muscle Shoals.

NEW MARKET - Winning pitcher Corey Williams got all the runs he needed in the second inning as Class 3A, third-ranked Madison Academy hit the road to take down 6A, No.8 Buckhorn in high school baseball Thursday night. The Mustangs (23-6) won in six innings.

"Corey Williams did an excellent job," Madison Academy coach Mike Good said. "Early in the game, we had some key hits and put pressure on Buckhorn. Our kids are playing with a lot of confidence."

Madison Academy got four runs in a second inning keyed by Andrew Purshock's two-run hit. Will Morrison added an RBI and the Mustangs got an unearned in the inning for a 4-0 lead. MA Baseball Work Day

Please pitch in to help out your school baseball team on these work days. We need your support and active participation. Please note; if the weather is severely cold this Saturday morning we will not start until 9:00 am. The weather report I saw indicated it would get to 50 degrees Saturday, so it should warm up for us. Some are planning to stop work by 12:00 or 12:30 because of previous commitments. Feel free to work as your schedule permits. We are planning on continuing work next weekend starting at 8 to 8:30 (16 December), weather permitting. This weekend I plan to survey the fence along the foul lines and across the outfield to note materials needed for repairs. Next weekend we can start some of these repairs. Thanks.
