Madison Academy ousted

HOKES BLUFF - Hokes Bluff knows something about winning state baseball championships. The Eagles have won eight overall and five straight, including the last four in Class 3A, and certainly need no help as they seek another one. Madison Academy offered some aid, anyway, on Friday. The second-ranked Mustangs allowed too many walks and had too many errors in being swept 13-1, 6-4 by top-ranked Hokes Bluff in a second-round playoff series. The first game went five innings.

"Too many freebies," Madison Academy coach Mike Good said. "You've got to win what we call the freebie war - have fewer errors, fewer walks. It's who makes the fewest mistakes."

Madison Academy, which allowed 15 walks and committed five errors in the doubleheader, finished the season 29-13. "Our hearts were in it,'' senior catcher Chandler Wicks said. "The physical part just didn't come around sometimes.'' Hokes Bluff (20-5) advanced to the quarterfinals behind a five-inning gem by ace Tyler Stovall in the first game and a dominant two-inning stint from him to close the second. The series began on a high note for the Mustangs when lead-off hitter Stafford Booth singled, stole second and scored on a double by Wicks to make it 1-0 in the top half of the first inning. Things took a downward turn for Madison Academy in the bottom of the inning when pitcher Kelby Deerman ran into control problems. After a strikeout, he walked one, hit Stovall with a pitch and walked another batter. Lance Barton singled home one run to tie the game, and the Eagles went ahead for good at 2-1 when Deerman issued another walk. Stovall (11-1) allowed only the two first-inning hits. He struck out 10 and walked one. Deerman lasted only 12/3 innings. He allowed eight runs, seven earned, on four hits with five walks, a hit batsman and an intentional walk. The second game also began with promise for the Mustangs when they took a 4-0 in the third on Deerman's two-run single. But things once again fell apart for Madison Academy in the top of the fourth.

Hoover Buccaneers Classic Tournament

Madison Academy 8, Hartselle 6: After all the drama that ensued in the previous inning, Corey Williams didn't mess around. The senior closer, who is signed to pitch next year at Vanderbilt, struck each Hartselle batter out looking in the final frame with a devastating curveball to earn the save. Williams fooled all three hitters with his 90-mph fastball and breaking ball with late movement. In the sixth inning, Hartselle mounted a comeback by simply watching Mustangs relief pitcher Scott Jordan self-destruct. The right-handed hurler took over for starter Andrew Parrish and proceeded to walk five of the first six batters. With bases loaded and one out, Jordan was able to get out of deep trouble by striking out the next two Hartselle batters. With the victory, Madison Academy took home the Buccaneer Classic Tournament title, winning four straight games to finish the event.

Madison Academy 12, Hoover 2 (6 innings): Madison Academy got quick revenge on the Bucs, and this time it counted. Hoover defeated the Mustangs Monday 9-8 but that victory was not apart of the tournament but was a make-up game for Huffman failing to play against Madison Academy. Kelby Deerman and Stafford Booth both hit two-run home runs in a six-run second inning that made the Mustang lead 9-0. Tyler Ray provided the only run for the Bucs (14-9) when his home run extended the game beyond the fifth inning.
