![]() Mustangs are simply the best By MIKE EASTERLING Times Sports Staff MONTGOMERY - In a postseason full of dramatic plays, a lazy fly ball put the exclamation point on the first baseball state championship in Madison Academy history. The Mustangs, who blew a seven-run lead Friday a day after staging an eight-run rally to take a lead in the Class 3A best-of-three finals, scored in the bottom of the seventh on Spencer Palmer's sacrifice fly to beat Trinity 9-8. The walk-off win, coupled with Thursday's 9-6 victory that was sealed by Andrew Parrish's grand slam, completed a two-game sweep for Madison Academy (32-16). "This has been my goal since I started playing baseball," junior shortstop Stafford Booth said. Two throwing errors by Booth - the winning pitcher in Game 1 - aided Trinity (26-11) in a seven-run sixth inning that tied the game at 8-all. "I was feeling pretty bad," Booth said. Ben Seabrook, who relieved starter Drew Mobley in the sixth, pitched a scoreless top of the seventh that included a 6-3 putout by Booth. "I had to redeem myself in some way," he said. In the bottom of the inning, Mobley singled with one out and pinch runner Matt Phillips scored from third on Palmer's sac-fly to right. Palmer had clinched Madison Academy's semifinal series win over Hamilton with a walk-off single in Game 3. Seabrook, who had one hit Friday after bagging two doubles in Game 1, was named tournament MVP after shutting down the Wildcats in the final inning. "Of course I'm a little bit nervous," he said, "but I just had to concentrate on throwing strikes and knowing the defense would make plays." The Mustangs moved ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning when center fielder Jordan Kerr doubled off the left-field wall to score two runs and continue a power surge he's had in the playoffs. "I have no idea where that (power) is coming from," Kerr said. Madison Academy coach Mike Good said he always knew Kerr was capable of doing damage with his bat. "He's one of our best pure athletes," he said. The Mustangs surged ahead 8-1 in the fourth on Kerr's sacrifice fly, an error on a RBI groundball by Seabrook, a three-run triple by Booth and Mobley's RBI single. Mobley cruised into the sixth, but Trinity strung together three hits - including Blake Barrow's two-run single - to make it 8-3. After Mobley issued a two-out walk, Seabrook entered. He hit a batter to force in one run, another came home on an infield single, and three more crossed following Booth's errors to make it 8-all. Seabrook finally coaxed a popout to end the rally. "When the wheels were coming off a little bit, we were able to right the ship," Good said. Trinity starter Cam Ransburgh took the loss - his second in two days - lasting just 32/3 innings. Mobley went 52/3 innings and Seabrook the final 11/3 for Madison Academy. Mobley and Chris Adams both had two hits for the Mustangs, who were making their second appearance in the state finals. "This is something you dream about and work for," Booth said.
